Animals of the beach

Evidence of marine animals will be hunted on the strandline. The conditions found by the sea will be discussed using role play. Then the rock pools will be investigated looking for shellfish, crabs, sea anemones and shrimps. Each animal’s adaptations will be considered with the children all having the opportunity to hunt and explore.

The intertidal zone is a harsh and challenging environment, thus it is perfect for adaptation studies and looking at how the animals are suited to their particular microhabitat. A number of parachute games have been developed to introduce the conditions a rockpool creature might have to endure.
